When I transitioned from managing a busy healthcare office to overseeing marketing initiatives as a project manager, many people asked if I was starting completely from scratch. In some ways, it felt like it – the environment and day-to-day rhythms are very different – but ultimately, I realized that many of the skills are exactly the same.
Much like in healthcare, things happen fast in marketing. The ability to remain organized, stay flexible, and communicate clearly is valuable whether you’re responding to an urgent patient records request or getting in project revisions before a rapidly-approaching deadline. Regardless of the situation, having a variety of backgrounds and skills allows the FSM team to bring a unique perspective to every project that comes through our doors.
How Organization Translates Across Industries
If there was one thing I knew when I was navigating the transition into project management, it was that organizational skills would be of paramount importance. Luckily, those skills were honed through the handling of complex medical records, management of hundreds of patient files, and juggling of busy provider schedules. Now, I instead use them to keep projects organized, ensure that task lists are orderly and detailed, and manage complex timelines so that projects are delivered on schedule and at a high standard of quality.
The Power of Pivot: Why Adaptability Is Important
Nothing teaches the skill of flexibility quite like the healthcare environment. Unexpected patient emergencies, last-minute schedule changes, and even system outages demand quick thinking and calm, efficient problem solving. In that setting, adaptability isn’t a nice-to-have – it’s a daily practice grounded in clear communication (shoutout to our core values!) and teamwork. That same ability to adapt in real time translates directly to project management.
This learned flexibility is crucial because marketing projects constantly demand it:
- Rapidly adjusting campaign scopes when priorities shift unexpectedly
- Maintaining efficiency when vendor or client timelines change on the fly
- Staying centered during project obstacles to ensure timely resolution
When priorities shift or timelines change and plans need to be adjusted, it’s important to be able to stay centered and adjust quickly without compromising quality.
Clarity Is the Best Medicine
Let’s bring it back to that clear communication bit for a moment. During my time in healthcare, I was the liaison between doctors, staff, and patients. I was responsible for ensuring all communications were HIPAA-compliant, and I was often communicating changes to the day internally in real time. Being able to communicate with precision and purpose was imperative – and, you guessed it, that’s not unique to the world of healthcare! At FSM, we proudly hold clear communication as one of our core values. Navigating complex processes, ensuring that the tasks we’re setting out have all the necessary details, and providing clear and frequent status updates are all essential parts of the workflow. Clear and precise communication both internally and externally allows us to ensure that we are elevating each other, our work, and, ultimately, upholding the goals of our clients.
Bringing a Fresh Perspective to the Creative Table
Whether it’s managing patient needs under pressure or a high-stakes campaign launch, it’s clear that the skills required are universal. My journey from healthcare to marketing project management is just one example of the unexpected strength that diverse backgrounds bring to the creative process. From the leadership and delegation of event planning to the grit and determination of building a tech startup from scratch, every member of our team brings a unique skillset that allows us to avoid industry echo chambers and create innovative strategies to help your business thrive.
