Writing Is More Than Typing

by Oct 6, 2026Copywriting, Uncategorized

What is writing, anyway? Just putting words on paper (or screens), right? Absolutely. But if you’re aiming to create something more meaningful than your grocery list, it goes a bit deeper.

Some see it as communication. Others view it as a fundamental skill. For romantics and poets, it’s life—passion, magic, or even the ultimate act of creation.

For those of us in marketing, it’s a tool of the trade. And for FSM’s Story Team, it’s our craft, informing our client’s audiences with concise, authoritative, and insightful messaging that cuts through the noise and drives meaningful action.

How We Create Compelling Content

Writing can be mysterious for people who don’t do it regularly, so we wanted to pull back the curtain and show you what goes into it for us. It’s not just typing out words; it’s about creating messages that anticipate what people are thinking, connect them to the information and ideas they seek, and respect their time with well organized and edited content.

It hardly ever comes out right the first time—but that’s okay. Writing is revising.

Writing Is Reading

Great writing starts with avid reading. Whether we’re diving into industry reports and journals, scrolling through blogs, or getting lost in a good novel, what we read sparks new ideas and keeps our content fresh. It’s amazing how a single line from a book or article can inspire an entire campaign or bring clarity to a complex concept.

Writing Is Completing a Puzzle

Instead of puzzle pieces, we connect different ideas. It’s about putting together information to create a whole new picture that the audience has never seen before, but is exactly what they’ve been looking for.

Writing Is Talking

You know how the best writing often feels like a good convo? That’s no accident. It usually starts with real conversations. We’re always talking with our teammates and clients, sharing ideas, pushing deeper into the topic, and asking “what if?” It’s in these everyday exchanges that the magic happens, allowing us to discover something new and share it with audiences.

Writing Is Synthesizing

At FSM, our writers are kind of like chefs in a kitchen. We take a bit from here, a dash from there, and mix it together to create something engaging and new. Our skill lies in blending diverse information to produce wholly original content that answers people’s questions and bonds them even closer to our clients.

Writing Is Organizing

There’s an art to structuring content so that it flows naturally and keeps readers hooked. Think of it like arranging a room to create an inviting, easily navigable space. Writers spend a lot of time organizing our thoughts, editing, and discarding clutter to ensure the reader has a clear, comfortable path from the first sentence to the last.

Writing Is Walking, Sleeping & Playing

Some of our best ideas come when we’re not actively trying. Creativity doesn’t clock in. It can sneak up on you when you’re out for a walk, playing with your dog, or even drifting off to sleep. That’s why we always have our phones or notebooks handy to capture these ideas during life’s little moments.

Writing Is Continuous.

Writing is a process of continuous revision. The first draft is just the start; we review, edit, and polish until our content meets the high standards our clients expect and deserve. Until we can look back at our work and soak in the Afterglow of well-crafted content that informs, persuades, and resonates.
